Knight to seek state house seat

TARBORO — Taro Knight was the latest to throw his name in the hat for N.C. House of Representative District 23. The Tarboro Town Councilman, who serves as mayor pro temp, filed Wednesday at the Edgecombe County Board of Elections office. Knight joined Shelley Willingham and Bronson Williams, both of Rocky Mount. All three of the candidates are Democrats.

Counting today there is five days remaining before the May Primary filing period ends (noon Feb. 28).

So far, the only other contested race is for Edgecombe County Sheriff. Incumbent James Knight and Allen Dennie, a former Edgecombe County auxiliary deputy have filed for the position.

Other candidates who filed last week were Edgecombe County School Board, District 3, Incumbent Evelyn Johnson and Ann Kent, District 5. Edgecombe County Department of Social Services Director, Marva Scott filed for District 7. Scott could face an opposition if John Edmondson Jr. files. Edmondson was appointed Feb. 17, by the school board over Scott to fill the seat. The seat was opened after Faye Taylor resigned.
