House fire victim identified

TARBORO — A victim of last week's St. David Street house fire was identified by a medical examiner and her name was released Thursday by Tarboro Fire Chief Frankie Winslow.

Jennifer Dancy Williams' body was burned beyond recognition last week when the front room in her 917 St. David St. house caught fire.

The SBI Arson Response Unit has completed its investigation, but hasn't released the cause of the fire yet. The medical examiner hasn't completed their investigation and are still doing toxicology test and haven't released Williams' cause of death.

Williams had a smoke detector installed in her home two years ago, but according to WInslow, she had all her doors shut to the hallway that led to the smoke detector.

"When you have the area where the smoke detector is located shut off, they become useless," Winslow said. "Having the smoke detector hidden like that eliminates the detector from doing its job."

Williams neighbor, Randall Bishop, saw smoke coming from the top of her residence and opened the storm door to the front of Williams' home and yelled to see if anyone was in there. He saw a blaze rolling under the door and didn't get any response so he called 911.
