Adkins named Southerner news editor

TARBORO — In the wake of editor/publisher John H. Walker's retirement, The Daily Southerner announced this week that long-time, local newspaper veteran Calvin Adkins has been named news editor.

Adkins, 52, officially assumed the position Wednesday and will be in charge of the day-to-day operations in the newsroom.

"I am speechless," Adkins said of the appointment. "I didn't expect this. I want to thank [Southerner parent company] CNHI and everyone who had a part in determining that I was capable of being news editor."

A familiar face on the local newspapers scene, Adkins has worked a total of 22 years with The Daily Southerner since starting as a stringer in 1988.

After a five-year stint as a stringer, Adkins assumed full-time duties in 1993. Leaving the Southerner in 1997, he returned in 2000 and has been on staff since then – serving in several capacities, including sports editor and photographer.

Although never officially a news editor, Adkins has been performing numerous editor duties over his tenure here.

Admittedly never expecting to named to the position, Adkins was living a  "dream" as a member of the Southerner staff.

"My only dream was to come to work here and do the best I can," he said. "If I do the best I can, then let the chips fall where they may.

"Still, the duties are nothing I haven't done."
