Tarboro native inducted into broadcat, cable HOF

TARBORO — NEW YORK CITY — Tarboro native Bill Goodwyn, president and CEO of Strategic Distribution and Discovery Education for Discovery Communications, was honored Monday night at the 23rd Annual Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. Goodwyn now joins one of the most prestigious groups in the Cable industry which recognizes the industry’s leading pioneers, innovators and stars of the electronic arts.

Goodwyn was officially inducted into the 2013 Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria. Hosted by NBC’s Meredith Viera and 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl, Goodwyn was joined by other notable 2013 inductees including Alex Trebek; Steve Bornstein, president and CEO of NFL Networks and Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate, among others.

A 30-year veteran of the cable television industry and 26-year veteran of Discovery Communications, Goodwyn oversees all content distribution strategy, sales and marketing activity on behalf of Discovery's U.S. content portfolio encompassing more than 13 networks and their high-definition and video on demand extensions. He also leads the company’s fast-growing Discovery Education division, the nation’s top provider of curriculum-based digital content and professional development resources in U.S. schools.

Since Goodwyn began his Discovery career in 1987, he has grown Discovery Communications’ U.S. content distribution business to exceed $1B, built the No. 1 ranked sales and distribution team in cable television and cemented Discovery as one of the top television and content platforms in the media industry.

A 1978 graduate of Tarboro High School, Goodwyn holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and now lives with his wife, Leigh, and their two children in Charlotte.
