Tarboro seniors fare well at state


TARBORO — Three days of competition during the Senior Games States Finals proved successful for several Tarboro participants as they returned home with a total of 15 medals. In addition, the group of eight competed in a number of events, including bowling, football and softball throw, basketball shooting, shuffleboard and the Silver Striders Fun Walk.

Tarboro had entries in the Silver Arts and a squad competed in the Cheerleading Showcase.

Tarboro was led by a trio of multiple medalists with two of those bringing home four medals each. Earl Leggett placed second in billiards, horseshoes and shuffleboard, while taking third in spincasting.

Judith Moss also won four medals with seconds in the 1,500-meter racewalk and 100-meter dash, and thirds in the running and standing long jump.

Reginald Moss brought home two gold medals with wins in croquet and spincasting.

Tarboro participants in the Silverstriders Fun Walk included Dorothy Byrd, Christine Fenner and Reginald Moss.

Other Senior Games participants were Cheryl Gay, Mattie Mooring, Jesse Partee, Virginia Painter, Opal Sills, and Judith Silvari. Volunteers for the State Finals were Harry Ballard, Walter Byrd, Lillian Kirkland and Debbie Owens.

The State Finals continued with the cornhole and bocce tournaments Oct. 8-9 in Clayton – where Mattie Mooring took third place in cornhole, while Leggett won bocce ball and was second in cornhole.

The golf tournament was also held Oct. 8-9 at Tanglewood Golf Course. The basketball tournament will be Oct. 25-27 in Greenville at the ECU Student Recreation Center.
