ECC trustees led by new chair and vice-chair

TARBORO — A new chair of the Edgecombe Community College Board of Trustees conducted his first board meeting last week.

Wick Baker, who was elected chair by board members in May, directed the proceedings of the board’s quarterly meeting held Aug. 1 on the Tarboro campus. Gloria Wiggins-Hicks is the board’s new vice-chair.

Baker has been an ECC trustee since 2007. Presently serving as interim president of Albemarle Health, he also is president of Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro.

He replaces former board chair Jonathan Felton, who recently retired from the board. Felton had been a college trustee for 43 years and served as its chair for the last six years.

“Thank you for the opportunity to chair this board,” Baker told trustees. “I promise to do my best to maintain the tradition of strong leadership that has characterized this office since Dr. Thomas Fleming was named the first board chair in 1978.

“I am especially grateful to Jon Felton for his effective and sound guidance as board chair. I have rather large shoes to fill.”

Baker, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, is a member of the Area L AHEC board of directors and the Access East board, and a member and past president of the United Way board.

Wiggins-Hicks has served on the board since 1997. She is retired community relations manager of Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant. She is active in the Chi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Wiggins-Hicks replaces James Long, who has served as vice chair for the last six years. Long, who has been a board member since 1979, will continue to serve as a trustee.
