Short meeting in Princeville

PRINCEVILLE — PRINCEVILLE — Without any items under consideration for approval or adoption, the board of commissioners breezed through Monday's meeting. The public comments with six citizens speaking, took up the majority of the time in the open meeting.

One of the concerns that former mayor, Ed Bridgers, expressed was police protection. The town is down from five to only one police officer. The officers demised from the department were listed due to various reasons. Bridgers told the board that hiring new officers should be one of their top priorities.

Since former police chief, Joey Petway left the force in December to take the same post in Sharpsburg, the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office has been in charge of the department. Lt. Richard Allen, who attended the meeting, informed the board of all the activities that the department responded to.

Immediately after the open session, the board went into a closed session to discuss a personnel issue that lasted well over 30 minutes. Under the General Statute, the board is not obligated to discuss issues in the open meeting that are talked about in closed session. No action was taken in the closed session, Mayor Bobbie Jones said.

Jones is hoping that Monday's light agenda is not giving the citizens the perception that the board is not working on their behalf.
