NECP to hold elementary lottery

TARBORO — North East Carolina Prep School (NECP) will hold a lottery for its elementary grades for the upcoming school year on Feb. 1.

“Right now, our projections have been met in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth, so we’ll have to have a lottery there,” said NECP Executive Director John D. Westberg.

The lottery will be held at the public charter school at 274 Husky Trail, with the drawing for grades one and two at 10 a.m., and the drawing for grades three through five at 11 a.m.

A third-party community member will draw the names of students from a rotating drum, and the person will not be affiliated with NECP, said NECP Director of Communications Diane LeFiles.

Applications received before the end of NECP’s open enrollment period (Jan. 15) will have priority and be entered in the lottery, in accordance with North Carolina House Bill 250: Charter School Enrollment, which states,

“During each period of enrollment, the charter school shall enroll an eligible student who submits a timely application, unless the number of applications exceeds the capacity of a program, class, grade level or building. In this case, students shall be accepted by lot.” Applications received after Jan. 15 will be placed on a numbered waiting list and those students will be accepted if/ when space becomes available in that grade level.

As of Tuesday, NECP had received 339 applications for next school year, its third year of operation.
