Princeville board cancels July meeting

PRINCEVILLE — PRINCEVILLE — For the first time in several months, the town's board room was quiet around 7 p.m. Monday.

The board cancelled its regular scheduled July meeting due to "no activities to be reported." The next scheduled meeting is Aug. 26.

A notice, which was signed by Mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates, commissioners Isabelle Purvis-Andrews and Calvin Sherrod was faxed to The Daily Southerner on July 17.

Commissioners Gwen Knight and Ann Howell said they were not given an opportunity to sign the notice.

Sherrod said he regrets signing the notice and he did so out of confusion thinking Howell had agreed to, also.

"That was the mayor's idea," Sherrod said. "After signing it, I realized I was wrong. We have plenty of business that we could have discussed. We need to vote on a resolution that will allow the town to collect money from citizens whose grass we cut, changing the town fee for using the park and there's a lot of more stuff on the table."

Howell agreed.

"As long as the LGC (Local Government Commission) has control of our books,  we need to have meetings," Howell said. "We can't afford not to."

Howell said an issue concerning the town's contribution to the fire department in 2012 could have been on the agenda.

"I'm hurt because there are too many things that needs to be done. We owe it to our citizens to meet every month and we should do just that. There should be nothing else above that priority."

Sherrod said he will try to get his board members to have July's meeting Friday or Monday. If he gets three members to agree, he will be successful.

Normally, town managers are responsible for providing agendas for local municipalities. Princeville's interim town manager was fired in May and the seat is still vacant. With the absence of a town manager, Princeville's agenda is put together by town clerk with information from the commissioners and mayor.

The town also postponed its July meeting last year. Everette-Oates called the meeting off the same day the LGC took over the town's fiances.
