FOR THE DAILY SOUTHERNER
SouthWest Edgecombe High School is now accepting nominations for the inaugural Distinguished Alumnus Award (DSA). The school seeks to recognize graduates who have made significant and distinctive contributions in the area of career achievement, community service, or service to the alma mater.
“We are continuously encouraging our students to reach high and achieve their best,” said Principal Marc Whichard. “What better way to support this goal than by pointing to those graduates of SouthWest Edgecombe who are role models for achievement and service.”
The purpose of this award is to identify SouthWest alumni who are making outstanding contributions.
“The brainwork behind this award is the CollegeWorks initiative we started at SouthWest to prepare all of students to be college ready,” says Terry Shackelford, testing coordinator and college access advisor at SouthWest. “The Distinguished Alumni Award will allow the school to create partnerships, connect with our alumni, and offer our students the opportunity to see role models who are products of SouthWest. This will also lead to increased school pride.”
The nominee for the DSA must meet the following criteria: He or she will have been graduated for a period of at least 10 years, may be living or deceased, and has demonstrated character traits, which constitute an exemplary role model for SouthWest Edgecombe High School students. The individual being nominated must have distinguished himself or herself in one of the areas of career achievement, community service or service to the alma mater.
The nomination form is available on the SouthWest web page by visiting HYPERLINK "http://www.ecps.us" www.ecps.us. Paper nomination forms are also available in the school office.
