Oysters, oysters and more oysters!
Captains Oysters Seafood Market, located at 2106 St. Andrew St. in Tarboro, specializes in oysters and an array of seafood items that come direct from the coast of North Carolina.
The shop held its grand opening Monday, and the vision that owners Vinson Lane and Steve Cherry have for their business is to help keep jobs in North Carolina.
"We are trying to keep North Carolina jobs," Lane said. "Buying from China is not going to benefit us. If we can keep the restaurants buying a North Carolina product, then it's just good for everybody. That is the way we are pushing this business."
The business has been in operation for two years and relocated from Manns Harbor, which serves Williamsberg, Nags Head, and the Virginia Beach, Va. area.
"All of the seafood comes from the North Carolina coast," said Cherry. It (Captains Oysters Seafood Market) was originally put here as a wholesale distributor. Then we said, 'Ok, if we are going to put wholesale seafood here, we might as well open it up for retail for the people of Tarboro to be able to come and get retail food. We are going to start servicing some restaurants in the area, people who sell seafood and others."
Shrimp, flounder, scallops, salmon, snow crab legs, crab meat, soft crab and more are just some of the varieties of seafood available at the market. Although the goal is to sell fresh North Carolina seafood, Lane said, "If we cannot get what the customer needs from the coast, we try to stay within the United States."
"Since we are going to be a wholesaler, that means we have a whole lot more selection here to be a retail, which normally, people wouldn't find if they went to a small retail store, because they are not going to house this kind of seafood."
Lane and Cherry are brothers who were born and raised in Tarboro and comprise two-thirds of Captains Oysters Seafood Market and Manns Harbor. They hope to become the leading providers for seafood lovers in the area.
"Opening here in Tarboro, is like giving Tarboro a little bit more variety," said Lane. "We had so many people come and say they had to go to little Washington to purchase their seafood. We just wanted to make sure that we could have a wide variety of food and also keep that distribution running. Instead of opening in Rocky Mount, Raleigh or other surrounding places, we decided that we wanted to just keep it here since we were born and raised here."
Captains Oysters is open from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, from 10-5 on Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday.
