Stroud completes second year at Shelton Leadership Challenge

TARBORO — Evan Stroud, a rising 10th grader at Tarboro High School, completed his second year at the Gen. H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge at East Carolina University on July 26. The Shelton Leadership Challenge at ECU is a six-day residential experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader. Students participate in activities that will help them have a greater understanding for: Personal Leadership Assessment and Interpersonal Dynamics; Role of Values and Ethics in Leadership; Leadership Traits and Approaches; Teambuilding and Empowering Others; Civic and Social Responsibility; and Goal Setting.
About 37 high school students from North Carolina and Virginia and their families gathered at East Carolina University’s Willis Building to start off the second annual Shelton Leadership Challenge, named after former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and retired U.S. Army Gen. Hugh Shelton. The highly decorated Gen. Shelton is from Edgecombe County and served as the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997-2001. Parents and camp attendees were able to meet and shake hands with Shelton and his wife, Carolyn.
