THE DAILY SOUTHERNER
Down East Animal Refuge (DEAR), a non-profit, no-kill dog refuge founded in Scotland Neck in 2004, has rescued and placed approximately 600 dogs in that period, according to spokesperson Gra Whitehead.
Like all area animal rescue groups, DEAR faces monetary issues and ever-rising difficulties in raising funds and finding loving homes for the dogs they rescu.
One of the ways DEAR raises funds is through a monthly seafood meal in Scotland Neck.
Now DEAR, which spends the majority of its funds in Tarboro — on dog food at Southern States as well as visits to the vets — is bring a seafood meal to Tarboro next Thursday.
DEAR will be set up at Marrow Pitt ACE Hardware on North Main and will have food available for lunch beginning at 11 a.m. and for supper beginning at 4 p.m. Available for purchase will be three-piece flounder plates for $8, a half-pound shrimp plate for $8, a combo plate (two fish and half-pound shrimp) for $9 and softshell crabs al la carte for $5 each.. All meals will be served with French fries, slaw, hushpuppies and tea.
