School supply giveaway

TARBORO — School children are invited to a school supply giveaway at Pioneer Court Community Center in Princeville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Joseph Smith is coordinating the school supply giveaway, along with his two brothers, Marvin Graham and Michael Graham and his wife Debbie, Sandra Carney and Jackie Price.

“I’m just trying to give something back,” Smith said.

Smith started a nonprofit organization called Effie Smith Maddrey Memorial Fund in 2005 in memory of his mother. Maddrey passed away in November 1995, leaving behind her home and land, which was lost by Hurricane Floyd.

“I have struggled with my nonprofit but continue to travel from New York to North Carolina and give out school supplies,” Smith said. “I do this with very little donations, most coming out of pocket, because I believe it’s what my mother would have wanted me to do, and it brings joy to my heart to see the smiles on the children’s faces.”

Smith’s ultimate goal is to build a center for seniors and young people on the Pioneer Court Community Center.
