Horticulture students, JROTC cadets create SWE cross country course

TARBORO — SouthWest Edgecombe High School students enrolled in Shelley Armour’s horticulture science class are creating a cross country course around the high school with help from the Air Force-JROTC cadets.

Students are “doing to learn” with hands-on activities that reinforce concepts such as leadership, teamwork, horticulture careers and plant biology they learned in class.

Under the guidance of Armour, students are utilizing a variety of professional tools to clear the forest floor and take down trees. The trees will be taken out of the forest and cut for firewood that the students will then sell as a fundraiser.

The classes welcome assistance in the form of tools and/or operation of large equipment such as tractors to pull out large stumps from community members that wish to participate in the project. Individuals that wish to volunteer their time to enrich the students’ experience can contact Shelley Armour at or call SouthWest at 827-5016. All volunteers will need to complete and submit the volunteer form located on the ECPS website under “resources.”
