Biotech Center on county's agenda

TARBORO — The proposed Biotech and Medical Simulation Center on the Edgecombe Community College Rocky Mount campus will be one of the many issues discussed tonight during the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners' first meeting of the year tonight.

The board will discuss a budget increase for the $13 million project and methods of pursuing other revenue to fund the center.

A county sales tax referendum passed in May, will fund the lion's share of the project. Construction on the project is scheduled to start July 1 and its completion is set for Aug. 30, 2015.

In other business, the board will start the beginning of the new year just like it did at the beginning of last year — addressing the county's foreclosed properties.

Three separate pieces of property will be up for consideration of approval for bid applications tonight during the county's first meeting of the year. One person has made an $100 offer on two properties in Rocky Mount, (814 Arlington Street and 510 Branch Street. while a business made a $200 offer for 420 E. Thomas Street in Rocky Mount.

If the bids are approved by the board, a public notice will be published in The Daily Southerner for upset bids.

In the county's April meeting, County Manager Lorenzo Carmon said the county have 48 properties that the county acquired with a tax value of over $900,000.

Other items up for discussion are:

• Edgecombe County Department of Social Service is requesting to hire six temporary employees to overcome turnover that was created by NC Fast.

• Consideration of approval of application from the Edgecombe County Public Schools request public school building capital funds.

• Consideration of approval of authorizing Chairman Leonard Wiggins to send a letter to Gov. Pat McCory, N.C. Transportation Secretary Tony Tata and the county's legislative delegation in support of improving US Highway 64 all the way to Norfolk, Va. for economic benefit.

• Consideration for approval of amending the county's Health Department's fee policy. One of the modifications includes proof of income to be submitted within 30 days after service or the patient will be billed 100 percent of the cost of service. Before the modification verbal statement of income was accepted.
