Phillipines trip is no vacation

TARBORO — Tarboro native Brooks Wadsworth is heading to the Phillipines but it's not to spend time on vacation.

Wadsworth, 39, is a part of Rescue 24 International Team and N.C. Baptist Disaster Relief team that will assist the disaster-ridden country that was recently hit by a typhoon, by providing medical assistance and water purification products to one of the hardest hit areas — Tacloban, Philippines.

"We're going there to try and bring hope to a desperate situation," Wadsworth said.

The mission trip will not be the first for Wadsworth. The 1992 Tarboro High School graduate has also given aid in Hungary, Haiti, Trinidad and several other countries that were hit by various disasters or strife.

“I try to use these unique gifts and experiences God has given to me to give glory to Him,” Wadsworth said. "We all have times when we may be in need. "God as blessed me so that I can be a blessing to someone else."

Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines Nov. 8. reduced standing structures to rubble, uprooted trees and killed more than 4,000 people.

Wadsworth, the pastor of  Robersonville First Baptist Church, is part of a eight-man team that left for the Philippines  Wednesday. They will assist with relief efforts, emergency medical, along with taking medicine and water purification equipment to provide much needed assistance. Over 100 water purifiers are also to be set up. Wadsworth's team will live in the same conditions as Filipino natives — without electricity or running water.

Wadsworth said that much of his interest in helping serve others came from the teachings of the Bible, the influence of his mother, Renee Bennett, and the heart and passion of his alma mater, Columbia International University, where he studied Intercultural Studies and Bible.

“God calls us to help bring hope to the hopeless, and it is our desire to represent Christ wherever the opportunity presents itself," he said. "We, as a community, get to be a part of giving back to others, even on the other side of the world.“
