5k race raises $10,000 for outreach ministry

— Eighty-four year old Clarence Bauer was one for the 115 runners who participated in the first annual The Movin’ for Community Outreach 5k race in Tarboro Saturday morning.
The runners filled the streets starting from St. Andrews Street to the Forest Acres community and back again.
Bauer, who finished the race in front of four people (46:02) from 52-60 years of age said he said he didn't have any problems finishing the race.
"I think I did good," he said.
If Bauer did good, than Lee House, 16, of Bethel was great. House (17:47) edged out Mark Peaden, 17, of Tarboro, by one second to become the first winner of the race. Brian Lankford 45, of Rocky Mount came in third place at 18:12.
Movin' for Community Outreach 5K race was organized by Kevin Shaffer of Richmond Va. Shaffer, who is formerly from Tarboro, said he thought about organizing the race in Virginia but he knew he wouldn't get the response as he did in his hometown.
The Mission of the Movin’ for Community Outreach 5k race is to cultivate awareness of the mission of Tarboro Community Outreach, develop opportunities for residents to get personally involved in serving the community, embody the spirit of Christian grace and service, and create passion in the community for physical fitness. The race met its goal of raising $10,000 for the Community Outreach.
"We were about $800 short this morning when we got started," Shaffer said. "We had about 40 people register this morning and we met our goal. That is wonderful. I'm glad that I had this event in Tarboro."
Tarboro Councilman Steve Hoard, 71, came in at 46:01 looked at the time and said, "Is that four days and six hours."
House and Peaden ran neck-to-neck the entire race. The duo runs cross country for North Pitt High School in Bethel.
Mears Pitt who helped organize the race was concerned about the weather. Forecasters had predicted ran throughout the morning. The rain held off until the final winner announcement was made.
"The weather was great for racing," Pitt said. "It is cool and it turned out to be better than we expected. We're going to do it next year. and this time we're going to invite people all over Eastern North Carolina. We're going to have double the entrants next year."
